Whatcom is the northernmost county in Washington State, containing 2,150 square miles and bordered by British Columbia, Canada, to the north, Okanogan County to the east, Skagit County to the south, and the Straight of Georgia to the west. Much of the county is mountainous, and lies within National Forest and National Park boundaries. The highest peak in the North Cascade mountain range, glacier-clad Mount Baker (10,778 feet), lies only 50 miles east of Bellingham.
